La Fortuna does not advertise itself. There are no resort signs on the highway, no shuttle buses, no tour groups. You either know about it or you do not. For those who do, it is one of the most reliable surf breaks on the East Cape and a genuine escape from the resort corridor, even though it sits less than an hour from Los Cabos.
The waves here are consistent and forgiving, with left and right breaks that work for beginners and experienced surfers alike. Year-round surf, almost no crowds, and a stretch of coastline that looks much the same as it did decades ago. The nearby town of El Cardonal has the basics covered, accommodation, food, and local life, without the infrastructure of a tourist town. Zai Sushi Surf Bar, just off the main road, is worth a stop after a morning in the water.
Getting to La Fortuna
La Fortuna sits on the East Cape, accessed via dirt road off the Transpeninsular Highway. It is roughly 45 minutes to an hour from Los Cabos International Airport and San José del Cabo, depending on road conditions. There is no public transportation serving the area and no rideshare coverage to speak of.
A pre-booked private vehicle is the only practical way to get there and back, particularly if you are carrying surf gear or planning a day trip from your Los Cabos hotel or residence.
